How to Jumpstart a Car

Let’s begin with the basic steps for how you jumpstart a car that has a battery in the trunk. You’ll find the starting aid terminals just to the side of the engine. Of course, it’s a good idea to locate them before you find yourself with a dead battery. Once you know where the terminals are located, get your jumper cables and a helper with a fully-charged car battery to help as you follow these steps.

How to Jumpstart a BMW: Connecting Your Cables

Your helper should pull up their vehicle—called a “booster”— to face the BMW. While the vehicles shouldn’t touch, you want them very close so that the jumper cables aren’t pulled tight. Once in place, the booster should turn their engine on while making sure everything on the BMW is turned off or unplugged. When the vehicles are in position, pop the hoods and attach the cables in this order:

  1. Attach one of the red clamps to your own BMW vehicle’s positive (red) terminal.
  2. Attach the other red clamp to the positive (red) terminal on the assisting vehicle
  3. Attach the black clamp to the assisting vehicle’s negative (black) terminal.
  4. Attach the other black clip to any unpainted metal surface on your vehicle.

Be very careful to ensure that the clamps don’t touch one another. They can generate sparks, which are especially dangerous when you’re working under the hood of a car.

How to Jumpstart a BMW: Charging the Battery

After the jumper cables are connected, wait five to ten minutes to allow the dead battery time to charge. At that point try starting the BMW. If it doesn’t start right away, allow some more charging time. Once it starts, remove the jumper cables, again making sure the clamps never touch.

Once disconnected from the booster, drive the BMW for about 30 minutes to recharge the battery.
